"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" Philippians 4:13 (KJV).
A good golfer tries to measure his or her game by beating a score considered “par” for the course. Some days are better than others. Consistent practice and knowledge of the game can certainly improve performance. However, there are always hazards and traps that get in the way.
Yes, we see the flag—it’s right over there. We have our ball teed up. We measure the distance and test the wind. All that is necessary now is to make excellent use of the woods and irons in our tool bag. What could possibly go wrong?
In this life, no matter how hard we try, we soon discover that we aren’t perfect. However, when we’re in Christ, we are given the tools to live with purpose and fulfillment through the hazards and traps of life. We can say with confidence, we can do all things, because Christ gives us strength!
Thirty years ago, professional golfer Larry Nelson was invited to Lexington, Kentucky by Christian Businessmen’s Committee of the Bluegrass to conduct a golf clinic. Many came out to see Larry. Later that evening, after dinner, he shared his personal testimony and love for our Lord and Savior.
What impressed me the most after sunrise that morning was the group prayer we had with Larry in the club’s locker room. There we dedicated the day to Jesus, and prayed that Larry’s visit would be used to lead others to Christ. Jesus responded in a glorious way!
Two weeks later, I watched Larry on TV compete for the 1981 PGA Championship held in Atlanta. I asked Jesus that Larry’s faithfulness in sharing his testimony and uplifting Christ would be rewarded by Him.
Throughout my life, I have seen the Glory of God on display in wondrous ways. What joy I had on August 9, 1981 when Larry won his first PGA Championship on the Highlands Course at the Atlanta Athletic Club. And then in 2011 when he received the PGA Distinguished Service Award.
What a distinction we have walking daily with Jesus as His disciples, and a privilege to share the Good News with those we meet along life’s fairways!
