the Names of Jehovah Wall Print
The unique names of God in Scripture reveal his character and help us to understand the nature of the God who loves us and whom we want to serve.
When God first spoke to Moses out of the burning bush, Moses asked him, "By what name
should I call you." God answered him saying, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to
the Israelites: `I AM has sent me to you'” Exodus 3:14.
The Hebrew name for God is YHWH, pronounced "Yahweh." (This is a
transliteration of Hebrew into English.) The Jewish people so respected
God’s name that they never actually said, Yahweh. Instead, they would say, “Adonai.”
In our
English Bibles, Yahweh is often translated as "Jehovah" or “LORD.”
For example, Psalm 23:1 says, “The LORD is my
shepherd.” When you see LORD written in all caps, you know the verse
refers to the covenant name of God, “Yahweh,” the One who sees us, cares for us, and rescues us.
It is important to note that Jesus identified himself as the covenant name of Yahweh, Jehovah. May you be encouraged to learn some of God’s unique
