Teaching Children to Respect Teachers

The golden rule, teaching respect

Spend a few minutes memorizing the golden rule, "Do unto others what you would have them do unto you" Matthew 7:12.

We call this the golden rule, because it is a very valuable way to treat others. However, the Bible doesn't call it "the golden rule." But Jesus wants us to know we are to respect others, because people are made in God's image. What does it mean to RESPECT others? (Receive answers.)

To respect others means to be kind to other people, to be courteous or polite in the way we use our words and our actions. We are to love one another, because God loves us. Today, we will use the letters of the word, R.E.S.P.E.C.T., to help us remember how we should treat our teachers who give of their time to teach us about God and our world.

REMEMBER, God gives us teachers to help us learn.
EVERYONE is happier when we behave well.
SITTING still helps everyone pay attention in class.
PAYING attention helps us to learn.
ENJOY learning new things about God and his world.
CARING for one another makes for a better class.
THANK your teachers for giving their time.

Coordinating Craft
Have children use white poster paper to cut-out extra large letters of the word, R-E-S-P-E-C-T, and then color the letters using crayons, colorful fabrics, glitter, markers, puff paint, buttons, shells, etc. You could also glue photos of the kids, teachers, pastors, parents, onto the letters and then display in class as a reminder to show RESPECT to one another.

(During the craft session you could play the portion of Aretha Franklin's song where she sings and spells out, R.E.S.P.E.C.T., it's about 1.48 seconds into the song.)
