1)
Forgiveness idea

>I would like to do something where I can actively involve the kids. Hurting someone, although not always intentional is easy,
>saying sorry and forgiving is the difficult part.

There is a popular slogan being marketed by Atheists that says, "Be Good For Goodness Sake." It seems like a no-brainer statement--a good thing. However, apart from the Holy Spirit and his controlling force, goodness is only a concept.  If we are not accountable to Holy God, then who says we should be good? and why? Who decides this standard? Why not get all you can now? regardless of who is hurt by your actions. If there's no standard, other than human standards, then why be good? You might even hear we should be good because this works best in nature. But if this is the case, then animals teach us survival of the fittest, only the strongest survive, eat others so you won't be eaten! The irony for Atheists is that they see value in being good. But why? Says who? Why do they value goodness? What makes goodness and good thing?

Good exists because of God--he alone is good (Mark 10:18). Apart from the New Nature (2 Corinthians 5:17), being Christ-like is only a concept. God's children are the salt of the earth that preserves the world--the light of the world that shines His light into dark places. With this in mind, regarding your class, the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:23-34) comes to mind. Have your kids write skits to act out the parable or draw it, then discuss how it applies to their lives, their behaviors, God's judgment and their awareness of what God has done for them--dying on the cross to forgive them--likewise, they are to forgive others as they have been forgiven. Don't forget to videotape them if they act it out!

2) Forty Days

Hello,

My name is Monique. I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia and I am really so grateful for your emails – I teach religious education in the State public schools and your newsletters have helped me a lot.

I was thinking about the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert and the three temptations from Satan and I was reminded of the first temptation in the Garden of Eden and of what John says in I John 2:16, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides for ever.” Hallelujah!! No wonder Jesus had to overcome for us! And through Him we become overcomers too.

And I am also reminded of the scripture in Philippians 3:14 about today’s people, ”their god is their belly, their shame is their glory and their minds are set on earthly things”. God help us all – how far we have fallen.

Happy Easter to you and all your readers.
Yours sister in Christ,
Monique

--from SSTN: thank you, Monique. Thank you for your comments and insight. Happy Easter to you!

4) Forgiveness Idea

I have used "Flash paper" to explain forgiveness. I take a piece of toilet tissue about the same size as a piece of flash paper. I write the word "SIN" on each. I explain how people may forgive us or we forgive someone who has wronged us but no matter how much we try we can not completely forget. (Burn the tissue-which leaves a little ash) Then I tell how God forgives....(Burn the flash paper-which disappears completely) That is how we SHOULD forgive. You can elaborate as you wish. Palm Sunday Presentation

I'm looking for some ideas for a presentation that Sunday School Students could do for Palm Sunday. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

--from SSTN: check out this activity at:  http://www.sundayschoolnetwork.com/craft_eggholders.html
You could enlarge the patterns so they're "poster-sized," then have children take turns showing and telling what their picture represents.

6) Forgiveness Idea

Good morning I am Cheryl June and I work in the Youth Ministry at Guiding Light Church (Bishop Jim Lowe). I am currently taking a Self-Confrontation Biblical Counseling Class. It has a great chapter about this that focuses on Matthew 18:15-35. This shows what we should do whether we are the offender or defender as well as if we do not forgive what God thinks of us. You can do skits for the children to show them how they look when they offend others and ask questions about it to get them thinking. When we see ourselves we are more likely to start to try and do what's right in God's will. So try a skit, or even acting out the parable in Matthew 18 to help them realize that is very important to forgive in order to be forgiven. Feel free to e-mail me if any questions.

Thanks,
Cheryl June

7) Happy Meals: Jesus Feeds 5000

I teach 5th/6th grade Sunday School girls; not too long ago, I taught a lesson on feeding the five thousand and came up with an activity that reiterated the lesson;

     1. There were 12 disciples assisting Jesus
     2. Five loaves and two fishes fed the five thousand
     3. There were twelve baskets of food left over

I called the 12 baskets that were left over “Happy Meals!” Each disciple had a Happy Meal for their next journey that they would take with Jesus. I gave each girl a white paper lunch size bag and map colors; They then designed a “happy meal” bag with activities containing information from the story.

i.e. a word find; fill-in-the blank sentences; one girl drew a basket and wrote instructions for 2 fish and five loaves of bread to be drawn in it; scripture reference for the memory verse; a prayer of thanks for the food; etc

The girls loved the activity; it was truly awesome to see them work together and how creative they were in making the bags. I hope you give it a try. It was lots of fun.

8) Moses and the Brazen Serpent

Maybe someone could use this [activity]. I am teaching Moses and the brazen serpent in children's church and decided to make snakes for questions and answers for the review. I made a snake for each two kids and will give one of the question ends to one child and the answer end to another. They will have to get together to answer the questions. If time permits, we might do it two or three times.

Still love SSTN!

9) Forgiveness Idea

Depending on the number of kids in class, divide them into 2 groups - Items required are crepe paper / scissors / glue / glitter (more can be added). A common model or piece of art needs to be made by the two teams. Split the items into 2 bags making sure that both teams are less in 1 or 2 items to the other team...so when making this common piece of art they would need to work together (however this you do not tell them) you need to mention the team with the best idea wins.

Get the teams to start working and human nature being, we would argue and not share and unintentionally be rude... Once they are finished within the time allotted. We then ask them to reflect if they have been what we teach them to behave and ask them to apologize and can probably go back and complete that piece of Art which would look prettier than before.

Hope this helped
Sabina
