1) Children's Message: Are You A Saltshaker?

Scripture: Matthew 5:13(a) – “Ye are the salt of the earth…”

Props: saltshakers and different types of salt – if you don’t have several kinds, be prepared to tell them about different types and their uses. For example; a table saltshaker – seasons our food; rock salt – used to melt snow and ice (and my family used it to melt ice in our crank ice cream freezer) – pretzel salt – a chunkier salt than used for the saltshaker; garlic salt – for cooking; Epsom salts – for soaking swollen joints; and huge blocks of salt - used for cattle and wildlife.

Snack: Pretzels with big chunky salt on them.

What do I have here to show you today?

These are different kinds of salt. Can you tell me how you use salt? (Let the children interact, and then expound explaining how different types of salt are used.

In the Bible, Jesus said, "Ye are the salt of the earth” in Matthew 5:13
Do you think Jesus thinks of us as Saltshakers? Maybe HE does!
When Jesus spoke these words in the Bible everyone knew a lot about salt. They used salt in many different ways.

In Bible time, salt was used as a covenant of friendship. A friend greeted with a piece of ...

4) Lesson: That Wonderful Name

Materials needed: Bible, 2 long sheets of parchment or butcher paper, permanent marker, name dictionary or access to websites that give meanings of names

Before class, make a list of all the names of the children in your classroom. Then, do some research to find out the meaning of each person’s name. (Example: My name, which is Carol, means “song of joy”.) Use one sheet of the paper to create a matching game for the children to play by listing their names on the left side of the paper and the meanings of the names on the right side of the paper. If there are some names for which you were not able to find a meaning, still list the name and the correct meaning of the name will just be a question mark. Let the child know that this does not mean that their name doesn’t mean anything, but that you simply weren’t able to find the meaning for it. After they finish this activity, tell them that you want to talk to them about a name that is above every name. Ask them if they ...
